Dark Sky Solution – Wheaton Globe

In an effort to make the existing street lighting Dark-Sky compliant, the Director of Operations in Wheaton, Maryland contacted the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations for assistance. Since replacing more than 200 globes or fixtures was not an option due to budgetary restraints, Montgomery County sought assistance from a major manufacturer. Montgomery County was not happy with the suggested solution, which was both ineffective and expensive. Montgomery County then turned to Lighting Maintenance Inc for a viable and cost effective solution.

The engineers at our testing and manufacturing facility in Rockville, Maryland came up with an effective, durable and cost effective solution. After providing the county with a prototype and test results, Lighting Maintenance Inc. was given the green light to proceed.

Lighting Maintenance Inc.’s skilled technicians used a black polymer coating with a durable textured finish to produce an attractive, Dark-Sky compliant solution that received positive feedback from Montgomery County, Wheaton officials and residents.

The original globe produced spill lighting in all directions, including the undesired wall wash (illumination of the building). The treated fixture on the left illuminates the street, sidewalk and surrounding area yet produces very little spill lighting.
