Towson University Sports Lighting

Preparation

Recently, Towson University wanted to upgrade their multi-use sports field “Burdick Intramural Field.” The University contacted the leader in energy efficient sports lighting MUSCO Sportslighting to design a state of the art system to meet the player’s needs and the neighbor’s concerns.

Once the lighting was designed, MUSCO contacted us to design the electrical system and perform the installation. Using AutoCAD, LMI’s chief designer created the electrical system drawing, including providing an engineer’s stamp. For this project, MUSCO was the prime contractor and we coordinated all activities through them, including providing a daily progress report.

Description of Work

Before the installation could begin, the old lighting system had to be removed and the concrete foundations demolished. The old lighting system consisted of 8 70 ‘steel poles. Our crews cut holes through the pole to insert a pin that was used to prevent the sling from sliding when the pole was lifted. Once the poles were on the ground, they were cut up for scrap metal and recycled. Next, a hydraulic hammer was attached to our skidsteer and the work of breaking up the concrete foundations was under way. This phase of the project took approximately one week.

While the demolition work was going on, the MUSCO equipment arrived on site. LMI crews unloaded the equipment and securely stored on site. The high tech customized light fixtures were stored in containers until our team was ready to assemble the poles.

Safety

LMI crews go through special safety and procedure training before being permitted to construct a sports lighting system. Safe lifting techniques are critical when unloading concrete stubs weighing several tons. One wrong move and machinery can tip over and seriously damage property or injure personnel. Our number one goal at Lighting Maintenance, Inc. is the safety of our employees and the public.  Lighting Maintenance, Inc. is very proud of our safety culture we have developed.  Our employees are trained to recognize and eliminate hazards.  From the first day of our employees, they attend training classes in the tasks they perform and are quickly introduced to our proactive safety culture. From basic roadway training to advanced confined space entry, our employees are always educated in the latest standards and regulations.  Lighting Maintenance, Inc. considers a good day a safe day.
